It’s interesting how the Insanity Plea now-a-days is used to weaken the sentence instead of making it harsher (like you said). It seems as if every other episode of Law and Order features the Insanity Plea take into consideration. It’s also worth pointing out how it isn’t taken as seriously as it was when it was used for a higher punishment. It seems like most people are really skeptical; this is also shown on Law and Order because the Plea is usually invalid. The Insanity Plea reminds me of the movie Primal Fear with Richard Gere and Edward Norton. Edward Norton is convicted of a crime and Gere defends him in court. Norton (sorry to spoil it for anyone) pretends to be insane in order to not be sent to prison and uses the Insanity Plea to do this. Norton’s character makes himself the victim and by doing this gains a lot of sympathy.
