There isn't too great a distinction between heroic and monstrous. What makes one important and praised is also what makes one hated.

Think of Rambo. Here is a decent, average man who dedicated his limited intelligence to furthering the nation's military goals. He didn't ask to be honored or praised or given any special treatment at all. He only wanted to walk through town in the rain, make his own way, and maybe get a coffee.

But Sheriff wouldn't let him.

Rambo became justifiably angry and the same qualities which once caused him to be praised as a hero allowed him to be a terrible monster. Their rejection caused a great deal of destruction and unnecessary death. Some would argue that Rambo is the closest thing to Heracles that modernity has produced.
