Men are, at least, the only animals which use language to communicate. And we are supposed to be examining texts written by and for humans. It would seem, then, that whether or not animals are rational is beyond the scope of the discussion. Not that it is an unnecessary inquiry, only that it is hard enough to understand humans being human.
