Subject: Identical Claims of Lear and Goneril

In Act 1, Scene 3, Lear and Goneril reciprocally accuse one another of monstrosities, beginning with Lines 4-5: "Every hour/ He flashes into one gross crime or other/That sets us all at odds". Now, maybe the unnaturalness between fathers and children that Edmund foretells in the stars is not only Lear-against-Cordelia, or Goneril&Regan-against-Lear; maybe Lear is actually guilty of the gross crimes. He's done it before, treating Cordelia to such unequal favor. Perhaps Goneril and Regan are not completely evil by nature, but feel justified treating Lear the way he treated them. If in the beginning he had the best portion of England drawn up for Cordelia, I'm sure Regan and Goneril felt they weren't getting their fair share. So why should Lear get his?

This may be the only sympathy Regan and Goneril ever get.
