But does she actually restore the proper boundaries? Is it right, when your father asks if you love him, to say I love you according to my bond? Not only does she play the game, but she worsens it with such statements. To refer to loving a father as bond and duty, returned like paying back a debt is to break her bond through abstractions of bonding. And she does this because she is caught up in the game. She is more worried about counterbalancing the errors of her sisters than pleasing a father she knows would misunderstand her.

Notice she does not decide to be silent until after hearing how Goneril has spoken. It's curious that Jackson said she could do nothing to not play the game, not, "there was nothing she could do." You see, if she didn't regard the game at all, if she did nothing about the game itself but only responded to the need of her father, she could have avoided both the game and her father's wrath. And she would have remained within her proper sphere of love.
