Subject: Cordelia

In The Scapegoat, Girard describes the stereotype of crisis as "the absence of difference, the lack of cultural differentiation, and the confusion that results." In King Lear, the dissolution of proper boundries begins in the first scene. Though trapped within the rivalry necessitated by Lear's question, Cordelia's answer seems to be an attempt to restore the proper boundries over stepped by her sisters' assertions: "I love your majesty/ According to my bond,/ no more nor less." Where Goneril and Regan profess to love their father more than the given long list of beautiful abstractions, Cordelia describes her love within the proper binds of a father and daughter relationship: "You have begot me, bred me, loved me./ I
Return those duties back as are right fit,/
Obey you, love you, and most honor you." She continues to recgonize the limitations necessitated by other social relationships: "Haply, when I shall wed/ That lord whose hand must take my plight shall carry/ Half my love with him, half my care and duty."
