Subject: Plato, Euripides, and reforming the gods?

Although this is not necessarily a 'must know' question, I started to wonder about it while reading "The Scapegoat" and was wondering if anyone had any insight into it. On page 79 (in the chapter "The Crimes of the Gods") Girard mentions the fact that the complaints of those who wanted to reform the gods, including Plato and Euripides, were actually legitimate. This got me to wondering about how such reform would be done. How would one reform the established gods? Are they talking about removing the guilt from the gods when anything 'bad' happens to a community, or are they talking about something larger than that? Does this involve reforming the personalities and characteristics of the gods? It's not a pressing issue, but just something I was curious about.
