Subject: songs feat. mimetic desire

Since we listened to a clip of “Jessie’s Girl” I have been trying to think of some modern songs where we can clearly see mimetic desire. The other day I was listening to AOL Radio and the song “Don’t Cha” came on. I had never really paid any attention to the lyrics before but there were a few lines that made me think of mimetic theory. Here are some of the lyrics:

I know you like me
I know you do

And in the back of your mind
I know you should be home with me

Let's keep it friendly
You have to play fair
See, I don’t care
But I know she ain’t gon' wanna share

I know I'm on your mind
I know we'll have a good time
I'm your friend

See, I know she loves you
I understand
I'd probably be just as crazy about you
If you were my own man
Maybe next lifetime
Possibly
Until then, Oh friend your secret is safe with me
Don’t cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me

Basically what I get from this is that the girl tells herself that the guy really wants her instead of his girlfriend. So the model is the guy’s actual girlfriend who is also the obstacle, and the object is the guy.

Another song that I looked at the lyrics for was “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5:

When I had you to myself
I didn't want you around
Those pretty faces always made you stand out in a crowd
But someone picked you from the bunch
one glance was all it took
Now it's much too late for me to take a second look

Here the guy only wants the girl now that someone else has paid attention to her. Later in the song the lyrics are:

I leave tear stains on the ground
Following the girl
I didn't even want around

These lines make it seem as if the singer is trying to make himself the victim by not pursuing the girl before she was taken by another guy.
