Subject: The Chorus in the Bacchae

Dr. Jackson noted in class today that one key "character" in the Bacchae is the chorus, which he described as "the one voice we should pay close attention to, but not trust." I wonder if Euripides uses the Chorus to most clearly, though cleverly, accuse the audience itself. Because, the chorus is the voice of Dionysus's followers, just as the audience would have been celebrating the Bacchaec rites themselves. The chorus constantly chides Pentheus for his pride and lack of devotion, presents numerous deffinitions of wisdom and the good life, all of which Euripides seems to contradict and even make ridiculous through the events of the play.
