I also wonder how this applies to the Hebrews. We don't like to think of them as a primitive, bloodthirsty, arbitrary culture (in fact, quite the opposite), but according to Girard, sacrifice wouldn't work for them unless they were unaware of the mechanisms behind it. To be honest, it makes me uncomfortable to imagine that they were as unaware of the arbitrariness of their goat as any other tribe sacrificing any other victim. I don't like to think of the Hebrews as a faceless, barbaric tribe who chronically got caught up in their own petty struggles and sacrificed an animal so that they might feel better again. Thoughts?
