I'm inclined to think that, as you suggest, there are two definitions of love in play: the Christian, "being willing to sacrifice oneself for another," and 'simple' love which admires, respects, likes, is attracted by, et cetera. I think this because all we have talked about in class and all of Girard's examples in "Triangular Desire" have focused on exposing the vanity lurking behind our desire. As you say, vanity and Christian love don't mix well; vanity is present, though, so if love is present, it must be a simpler (and lesser) kind than the Christian. Presumably, one goal of studying mimetic desire is to understand more about ourselves; once we understand our desires, we are better equipped to master them. "Mastering them" essentially mean becoming more sanctified. From here, I suppose, Christian love could enter the triangle by displacing (or at least supplementing) the other kind of love...but I don't know what that would look like.

Dr. Jackson did allude to scholars who see triangular desire working positively, but left it there.
