Subject: A question about the line between love and hatred

Ever since my first semester with Dr. Jackson, I've been struggling with the concept of the bluriness between love and hatred. So much so that I spent time thinking about it even when I wasn't in Dr. Jackson's class. My question is: so far when we say that the subject loves the model, we seem to mean that the subject wishes to imitate the model, he wishes to have what the model has, and even that he may respect and admire the model. But I wouldn't call any of those things "love," even though respect and admire may be parts of love. If we give a Christian definition of love as "willing to sacrifice oneself for another," hatred and love seem imcompatible. It isn't difficult for me to imagine someone admiring and hating another person, but truly loving and hating seems unlikely.

Girard gave a definition of hatred (someone who prevents you from having an object, the desire for which that same person instilled in you), but he didn't define love. Is it a matter of definition that's causing my confusion or is there some other disconnect?
