Subject: Eucharist

Considering his view of sacrifice and ritual, what does Girard think of eucharist? In the Anglican and Catholic traditions at least, the Communion Service is very clearly a ritualized sacrifice of Christ: the language of both services is explicitly sacrificial, first of Christ but also of his followers in response; the cup and wafer are lifted before the alter to the words "Behold the Lamb of God who takest away the sins of the world." If Christ came to expose the violence and deceit within the pagan systems of sacrifice, ritual, and religion, why did he command us to repeat a rite so similar? Is there a difference between Christian rites and pre-Christian practices that I am missing?

Also, Girard claims that the myth and ritual necessitate unconsciousness and forgetfulness in the practitioners. But, both Judeo and Christian rites seem especially commanded so that man will remember the true deeds of the Lord.
