Subject: Blurring distinctions in Twelfth Night

I started reading "Twelfth Night" for another class and as I was reading the first two acts last night I couldn't help but notice the blurring of distinctions that the character Viola (Cesario)is responsible for. In the first act Viola decides to present herself as a eunuch, and then later settles on being presented as a young man who is a messenger. Later she reflects on this decision and says "Disguise, I see thou art a wickedness / Wherein the pregnant enemy does much" (Act 2, scene 2, lines 27-28). Later in the same scene she refers to herself as a "poor monster" as she finds herself as somehow neither female nor male (lines 34). These lines seemed to reflect, for me, some of the fears that we have scene displayed in primitive and classical cultures who feared the results that the blurring of such distinctions could bring.
