Subject: Romans 12:1

Girard's readng of the crucifixion is explicitly non-sacrificial, but that seems at variance with some other, Pauline texts. In Romans 12:1, Paul writes "I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, whgich is your spiritual worship." Here Paul explicitly uses the language of sacrifice in worship as our means of approaching God. He writes of this sacrifice as a pleasing to God. Yet, within the context of Girard's reading, self-sacrifice would merely be "scapegoating" yourself and thus not pleasing to a non-violent God. Besides, a scapegoat is not alive. Perhaps Girard would understand this sacrifice differently; I can't say that I completely understand how a passage such as this would fit into his reading.
