Subject: Literary vs. Oral cultuer

As I look at the mythologies we've been studying, I've noticed something peculiar. They are almost all first an oral tradition. I'm wondering if perhaps the key to the difference between mythology and simple mob violence lies in the difference between oral and literary cultures. Euripides and Sophocles were writing older myths into scripts. The Genesis account was orally maintained for... I don't know... and even the gospel accounts were written 20 to 30 years after the fact of Christ's crucifixion. All this seems to hint that maybe Girard has noticed a trend that occurs when it's easier for cultures to change their stories. Maybe its the retelling that causes the trends of sacrifice and divinization seen in Violence and the Sacred. Just a thought...
