The idea that time can cancel sin is really fascinating. I was reading the Ten Commandments and in them God explicitly says �I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected � even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands� (Duet. 5:9-10). I haven�t read The Problem of Pain but the quotes you have are really interesting. Time is not the way to resolve our sins, but we must repent, not just for our own sakes but for future generation�s. God states he will give �unfailing love� to those generations who continue to love and obey Him; so as you said, �the next generation will have its own trials,� and thus the chance to repent for their sins and continue to follow God�s commands.
