Since the start of this class I’ve noticed how many parts of his theory can be applied to various aspects in life. Girard obviously looks into literature to show his theory, which probably gives it more solidity (at least to critics) since there are written examples. Plus, it might be easier for some people to hear about mimetic desire and scapegoating looking at “fictional” characters rather than real life situations (especially with scapegoating since it has a negative connotation). There have been countless psychology experiments that show how humans learn from mimesis so I think people have an easier time accepting this. But with scapegoating, since it is usually done unconsciously in a group, people seem to prefer to see it in literature than in their actual surroundings. I know I am kind of stating the obvious but I definitely look around and see parts of Girard’s theory applied to aspects of human life. Scapegoating and mimetic desire don’t seem that hard to find especially when looking back at the past (how I acted with my older brother, etc.).
