Subject: Another reading on the pig herder's request

After the demons plunge into the Bay of Pigs, the pigherders come to Jesus and literally ask him: "And the asked him, all the crowd of the surrounding region of the Dekapolis to go from them." I had once heard, and I had to go back to my room to check the original wording, that this could be read in two ways: the crowd asks Jesus for him and his disciples to leave them or the crowd asks Jesus that they (the crowd) might go away from Jesus and his disciples. The ap' auton is ambiguious. While we made the case today that these pig herders wanted Jesus to take his revelation away from them, I wonder, when they saw the fate of the pigs in the water and the fate of the mob, if this was a repentant gesture. They ask to be disbanded. They like Legion plea for mercy as they fear that Christ will likewise cast them out of the land. They ask if they can go away some where else. This would still creat a strong contrast with the mob that pushes and shoves to greet Jesus at his return. Unlike the pigherders, they do not yet realize what it means to be a crowd.
