Excellent comments. I feel like this renewal of the scapegoat mechanism can be seen in Girard himself. Despite his high awareness of the scapegoat mechanism, he often, and seemingly unconsciously, scapegoats something else when attempting to reveal the system. At one point it is Anselmian theology; at another, it is the book of Hebrews or the Gospel of Matthew. Often, his polemical language tends to scapegoat various members of the opposition. So, even in his awareness of the scapegoat mechanism, Girard still participates in the elements of it. On a societal level, only universally perfect insight (something which I think few would ever credit to mankind) could achieve the sort of apocalypse Girard predicts.
