Subject: Is Peter really innocent?

In Caiphas’ courtyard, the final visitor, “another someone” (Luke 22.59) joins the circle to likewise accuse Peters, adding that “êáé ãáñ ãáëéëáéïò åóôéí” (Luke 22.59) [“for also he is a Galilaean”]. In his thick northern accent, Peter brilliantly objects, “áíèñùðå ïõê ïéäá ï ëåãåéò” (Luke 22.60) [“Man, I do know that which you are saying”]. Earlier in his gospel, however, Luke identifies the rebellious nature of the Galileans among the Israelites when the crowds ask Jesus about the Roman response to a recent Galilean rebellion (cf. Luke 13.1) where the Romans mingled the blood of the rebels with their sacrifices (What an erasing of distinction—mingling sacrificial blood with sacrifices. No wonder there was a rebellion in Galilee). As Jesus bears the charge as a self-proclaimed “king of the Jews”—a Messiah figure in opposition to the Roman control of Judea, Peter denies his connection with Galilean rebels of any sort. Romans send rebels to prison; Romans put their rebels to death. Since Peter is a Galilean, and he does indeed follow a new Messiah, the “other someone” might not be far off in identifying Peter as a guilty party. Not all scapegoats are innocent…
