Thanks, Kiernan. If anyone is still interested in the questions I had been asking, I think Dr. Jackson gave the answer when he read Psalm 51 in class, and offered a non-sacrificial model of contrition. I had always thought of contrition as sacrificial, as necessary because of the "Angry God" principle; but the Psalm reading clarified that from the non-sacrificial reading of the Gospels follows a self-sufficient process of contrition or confession, and this is the kind of worship we have left after Christ negates the call for sacrificial violence.
