Subject: scapegoating in practice

While reading Girard’s the Scapegoat I began thinking of all the examples of scapegoatism I could. I especially tried to look at ones happening today. One that I came across was sports. I’m not a huge sports fan so correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems when a team loses fans usually try to blame specific people, like one of the players or the coach. Like in football if a player fumbles the ball at the end, and the other team wins, everyone blames him. The way I see it he was part of the reason they lost just as much as he is part of the team. One specific example I can think of is during the World Series a few years ago the Chicago Cubs were playing, and a fan reached for the ball that was coming towards the stand and an outfielder was also reaching for the ball. The fan touched it realized the player was there but the damage had already been done. The Cubs ended up losing, and pretty much everyone turned to that fan saying they probably would have won if it wasn’t for him. Being from the Chicago suburbs and knowing some major Cubs fans it was interesting to see their reaction to the situation in person. Most were not happy and said they would understand if he went into hiding for awhile. The way I see it one team wins, and the other loses; it’s just sports. There are obviously many examples of scapegoating in society especially in areas such as politics. It’s fascinating what people will blame the President for when he most likely had little if anything to do with the problem. Can anyone else think of other examples?
