I'm not too sure about all that "he had the luck" business. I think that taking the position that Don Quixote was lucky in the way he lived and died would be to (mis)appropriate the position of the narrator. We can't forget that Quixote is said to throw away all claims to chivalry and chivalric literature, as well as claim that he wished he had never heard or read any such things in his life. Also, the (slightly humorous) addition to the Will of his niece states that she loses her inheritance in the event that she marries a man who has ever read or enjoyed Knightly Tales. On the other hand, if we take the position that the narrator IS to be trusted, we run up against the same wall in that he claims that Don Q. "died wise". well, this "wise" man exclaimed that his delusion had been utter folly and seems to think his life would have been better had it never happened.
