Subject: Inconsistency in Sancho??
In reply to: Shannon 's message, "Inconsistency in Don Quixote?" on 16:20:34 01/23/08 Wed

It's hard for me to draw any systematic conclusions about Sancho. At many times throughout the novel, Sancho appears to be the Sancho that Shannon cited: the somewhat realistic, more sensible counterpart to Don Quixote. I suppose that this is the classical reading of Sancho. Even at the end of the tale, his indulgence of Quixote's former fantasies can be written off to sadness rather than actually believing in those fantasies. It should be noted though that Sancho never denies any of the fantasies that he receives from Don Quixote concerning himself. That is to say, while he thinks his master's fantasies concerning Dulcinea are foolish and a little insane, he fully accepts and looks forward to the desire he appropriates from his master of being governor of an island (until he learns that governors eat rather poorly of course). It seems that there is something to Gerard's claim that Sancho and Quixote are more alike than modern critics would like to admit.
