Subject: Reading History

I just wanted to point out that the way Girard describes reading historical documents reminds me of the fourth "level" of reading in the system that Dr. Jackson outlined in class on Wednesday. The fourth level seems to come almost naturally in the initial reading of Guillaume de Machaut's persecution text, as summarized by Girard in the beginning of Scapegoat. The reader is aware that a narrative sequence is laid out, but also understands that de Machaut is reading some of the events incorrectly, which changes his narration of the events. The historian's job is to decipher the misreadings, and he is fully prepared to distrust the narrrator. I don't want to carry the metaphor too far, but I think it's interesting that we eagerly distrust the narrator in certain historical documents, but are hesitant to do so in literary texts.
