Subject: Jonah and the Scapegoat

In the introduction to "To Double Business Bound," Girard describes that the community must consider the scapegoat to be both the means of making trouble and then of bringing peace. I wonder how this applies to the biblical account of Jonah on the ship headed for Tarshish. A storm arises. The sailors draw lots to see who they will scapegoat for their catastrophe on the sea. Jonah owns his guilt. They throw him into the sea. The sea calms. This model seems to follow the model of the scapegoat really well, other than the fact that Jonah IS guilty. He is not an arbitrary vicitm. He owns his guilt, and his expulsion really is connected to the resulting peace "in the community." Curious. Does that still make him a scapegoat?
