Concerning bed time stories, we have developed a tradition of having these as a "mandatory ritual." Usually first my wife reads him some stories in Russian, then I read stories in German, but at least one of us has to take some "1:1" time with him. I recognized I have to talk a lot with him about the stories to make sure he really understands, and this is also the fun part of it. Otherwise I could simply feed him with an audio tape for children. After or before reading, when he is in the mood, we sometimes also talk about what he experienced in the kindergarden, or other questions that interest him. We are currently strengthening the tradtion of praying together, in a way that is appropriate to his current level of understanding. Though I am often very tired in the evening, this pre bed time is probably the most valuable for him and also for us, so I try to ovserve it somewhat "absolutely."
