Subject: Harry Potter reader challenge

J.K. Rowling made a challenge to young readers that was picked up in a story by The Associated Press. She was at a Scottish book festival reading from the fifth Harry Potter book when she suddenly noted that there are two questions that she has not been asked by reporters. Your middle school and high school students probably have read some or most of the Potter series, since they have grown up with them. Ask them to discuss these two questions posed by the Harry Potter author:

1) She said readers should be asking themselves “not ‘why did Harry live’ but ‘why didn’t Voldemort (Harry's arch enemy) die?”’

2) "Why didn’t Dumbledore kill, or try to kill, Voldemort (headmaster of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry)?”

Have students do a search of recent news reports to find the name of the sixth Harry Potter book and have them discuss possible plots they would like to see in the seventh book. Thanks to Harry, they've been reading. Now, get them writing as well.
