That question is actually quite hard since the answer ranges from 2 to 26. I will throw some stuff out there that may surprise you:

- North America can mean anything from the USA and Canada only to Panama and everything north of it.

- Contrary to popularly held opinion Greenland is not an independent country, it is a part of Denmark.

- Saint Pierre and Miquelon, islands right off the coast of Newfoundland, are both a part of France. Even narrow definitions of North American that exclude Central America and the Caribbean often include France.

- At one time a law required appointees to certain jobs in Canada to receive their position on British soil. Since most were living in Canada before the appointment and travelling across the ocean was time consuming and dangerous a small patch of land on the east coast of Canada was offically declared a part of Britain. I don't think they ever changed its official status, so the UK is also in North America.

- Another argument for the UK is Bermuda, which is often included in narrow definitions.

I would personally say you have 5 countries in North America: The US, Canada, Denmark, France and the UK.
