I agree reading fictional things can provoke thought, and I don't fault those who read. It's just not for me, and I'm one of those college graduates that hasn't read a novel or poetry in the last year, or the last 10 years. I have read many, many articles, journals, textbooks, etc. Does it make me part of the dumbing down of America? I don't think so.

In my life, truth is more important than fiction because I deal with people's lives. I also agree that the capacity of the mind is infinite, but the time you have to fill your mind is not infinite. The more I know medically, the better I am at being part of the team that helps people survive, and that gives people more time to spend with their loved ones. That's more important to me than made up stuff.

I also agree with your statement about reading vs. television. If I were to choose between which the better option is I would definitely have to go with reading.
