Maybe the class size thing is true some places, DD, but it hasn't been true in my experience. I started my public schooling in 1961, and I was never in a class of fewer than 30, with only one teacher. I had a pretty good public education. (You have to factor in that we had discipline back then.) My daughter was never in a class of more than 20, and she had a crappy public education.

Currently, the grandlynx has 55 in her class, but they have four teachers. It's not the standard system of education, but she is getting a superior education to what my daughter had.

Emphasis is placed on different things now. Grandlynx's school in very strong in math and science, and they encourage kids to write. However, they are never penalized for poor spelling, and they are never given spelling tests. That bothers me.

Back to the class size thing, if you look at countries that outperform the US educationally, you almost always find larger class sizes, so I think there are other factors at work.
