"The cost may be different than originally planned but it's not like that patient would pay for urinary infection *and* diabetes treatments, just the cost of the actual care. That still holds true here."

When I looked at the site it appeared to me that you would pay for the treatment you wanted online, then go to the doctor's office. Once at the office, they give you your pulmonary function test (since that's what you ordered), and then if results are negative they would suggest doing a series of allergy tests so you'd have to pay for the next package.

Instead, I'm assuming you pay for the service online, you arrive at the office, and the doctor does an initial assessment. If the doctor finds it's more likely allergies than asthma, he will then advise you to do the allergy test rather than a PFT, applies the money already paid to the allergy test, and you pay the ~$50 more for the more expensive test? If so, that's more like the traditional visit to the doctor's office.

I guess I saw it more like an Amazon.com type of thing. If I go to Amazon.com and order a blender, I get the blender I selected and paid for. If I choose a blender I didn't like I can always return it, but when you pay for something like a Pulmonary Function Test, you can't return it after the test is completed.

I do think it's a great idea to be able to compare prices, and I also think it's great that it might help to make doctors more competitive in pricing. Even though I have insurance I'd still do the price comparisons if it were available in CA.
