The Cosby Show was the most popular sitcom of the 80's. Most of America could relate to the storylines and many families watched the show together. White America watched a loving black family that may have shared many of their same values. Black America saw role models that weren't musicians or athletes.

Young people struggling with their sexuality have an example of one of the most beloved literary characters of their generation who lived a life of meaning. Heterosexuals and children to young to think about sexuality have an example of an admirable person who happens to be gay.
