Let's say some writer is compiling a book intended to be a Who's Who of Harry Potter, and is looking for basic background information on some of the characters... age, hometown, parents, etc. Can Rowling actually say what her ideas were for each of these kids (this one's from Madagascar, that one was born on Feb. 29 in a leap year, this one's an orphan), or does she have to get an almanac and choose the most likely demographic for each of these kids to make sure nothing even remotely interesting is in their backgrounds if it wasn't specifically written into the story already?
