I don't understand what EJ is saying either. Either he's saying it isn't relevant now, so why talk about it, or that it was never relevant. If it's the latter, then the hair comparison is perfectly valid. But I don't know how something that was relevant during the story could somehow become irrelevant after the story has been written. People always ask questions about a writer's motivations. Look at movies like Mulholland Drive, which is packed with symbolism, and people have hounded David Lynch for years to hear his ideas about the meanings behind many of the scenes.
