It sounded a lot like what happened to my dad's computer about a year ago. These fake software screens take over and say that you have a major problem and you should run this software to fix it. There really isn't any software and it's a virus.

A lot of the solutions can be pretty complicated and take a computer savvy person to do them.

That's the first thing I try whenever I get ANY irregular looking messages.
