I can understand Dane Cook not being everyone's cup of tea. But, at least to me, he's funnier than most of the stand-up comedians I see on TV. I think people just get put off by his smug attitude and make a conscious decision to hate him, which gives them a biased opinion of the quality of his jokes.

Personally, my favorites are Brian Posehn, Patton Oswalt, and the late great Mitch Hedberg. And I love the Stella and Upright Citizens Brigade troupes, although they're more sketch-based than standup.
