That is exactly the question. Here's the answer that I propose: This is a list of the greatest films OF all time. We are more interested in the greatest films FOR all time. And those two aren't the same.

The greatest films OF all time do influence other movies. The greatest films FOR all time influence us.

If you look at IMDB's list of the greatest films of all time--films ranked by folks like us--you'll see a great deal of similarity with AFI's list, which means that the OF and FOR lists share many criteria. These are the things, imho, that make a film the total package: The story as it is brought forth through dialogue, acting, cinematography, music score, costume, etc...

All of those things must come together flawlessly toward the same purpose--telling the story. And not just any story. It's gotta be a story that resonates.

So: What makes a story resonate? Can comedies resonate? We poo-poo the AFI for not including many (Tootsie, pah) but we ourselves haven't included many in the IMDB list.
