It's pretty hard to explain, but here are the bare bones.
A mysterious stranger shows up in the surf town of Imperial Beach CA and attaches himself to the once-famous Yost clan, a dysfunctional surfing family torn apart by drugs. Over the next nine days, strange and miraculous things occur. At various points it has the Yosts and their friends wondering if John is an angel, a demon, an alien, a terrorist.
The underlying theme of the show is that everyone is eligible for redemption, no matter how bad they have been.

Prior to production, creator David Milch said that the show grew from this question: If God had a message to give to the people on earth, and there was some urgency about it, how would he go about delivering that message?

It was a fantastic show, a great puzzle. I watched each episode at least three times.
