David Milch was also the auteur behind NYPD Blue and Deadwood. He's a farkin' genius.

HBO never expected John from Cincinnati to have a huge audience. It was more of a niche show. Here's why I believe it was cancelled. Remember six or so months ago when HBO's CEO was arrested for roughing up his girlfriend in a Vegas parking lot? He subsequently resigned and a new CEO was brought in. "John" had been a pet project of the former CEO. As typically happens in the entertainment biz, when the leadership changes, the direction changes, and good shows get lost, all because of ego. The most notable victim of that practice was probably The Drew Carey Show. It was still in the top 10 when its creator was jettisoned from the network, and his successor deliberately killed Carey's show by scheduling it at weird and different times every week. Why? Because it wasn't his. I think something similar happened with "John."

At least HBO is intending to keep a production deal with Milch. I will watch any future show that he's involved in.
