I would like to see more small communities go dark. Here in Sedona, we are an International Dark-Sky Community. (Flagstaff was the first, and there are numerous others around the nation.) We have no residential street lights, our businesses have no electric signage, and our main thoroughfares and parking lots have low-impact lighting. It can be a bitch if you're looking for a particular house number at night, but other than that, it's a very pleasant way to live. Just imagine the positive impact this could have if more communities would adopt this practice.

On a personal level, we have completed our switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs. Also, I put a clothesline in the backyard a few months ago. I didn't even know if I would use it all that much, but as it turns out, I have reduced my dryer usage by half. I think most people would be pretty surprised if they knew how much of their home's power is used by the dryer.

I don't know if they do this everywhere, but both our electric and gas companies periodically send us graphs of our historical usage, and I find this very helpful. Our power usage has gradually declined over the past several years. The really nice thing about that is that even though power rates have steadily increased, our utility bills have not increased. Being able to see how much you used in the past is really helpful in developing personal strategies for decreasing usage.
