I'm not sure about the copycat thing... the news puts all sorts of stuff on TV... the letter from the guy who killed all those Amish children for example... and nobody seemed to get their feathers ruffled about that. This isn't the first shooting at a school, nor will it be the last and I would be hard pressed to blame the media for that.

Besides lack of good parenting skills, which I agree that MANY MANY people lack, I think it's also a sad commentary on the "mean girl" syndrome. Kids are relentlessly cruel to anybody they deem different, or nerdy. A person can take only so much abuse before they snap.

If this young man was an outcast and picked on, I think making his writing public could be a good tool to teach kindness and compassion. That said, one would be required to have good parenting skills to actually figure that out and use it to teach their children something positive.
