First of all, let me congratulate you on succesfully running for a seat in the Legislative Council.
I must confess that initially, I, like many others of my middle-age middle-everything group, wondered if you will get anywhere, given your position as a banner-waving, slogan-shouting, coffin-carrying street-fighting radical. To my surprise, you demonstrated all through the election campaign your ability to communicate very convincingly, your pro-democracy, anti-governement/business collusion message in a simple and succint manner, a skill that to this day, Tung Chee Wah still has not figured out. Your banana waving act in front of James Tien is an absolute piece of work. Frankly, had I lived in the New Territories, I would not have hesitated in voting for you.
Now the congratulatory phase will soon come to an end and you now have to face the music. 60,925 peopel voted for you, they voted for you to be their voice within the Legco chambers. They voted for you to work with others, some you may not see eye to eye with on many issues, to monitor and scrutinize the work of the hopeless Tung Government, a government that you loathe. They did not vote for you so that you can stand up in Legco shouting slogans and end up in jail. That is not why you are a Legislative Councillor.
I graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison; a university with a very radical history. One of it's former student leaders during the height of the Vietnam era ended up as mayor of Madison when I was an undergraduate during the late 70s. He shed his radical looks and even put on a jacket and tie; but most of all he got things done during his term in office. Long hair, your time has now come. No, I am not asking you to shed your trademark hair and Che Guevara T-shirts. I am asking you to knuckle down and work with others to get things done. You can still wave you banners, shout your slogans and carry your coffins, but do so outside Legco chambers. Waving bananas in front of James Tien may have won you coverage and kudos during the campaign, but doing so within Legco chambers is not going to get you anywhere.
60,925 people voted for you to be their voice in Legco, NOT in jail. Don't betray their faith in you.
Good Luck !
