TEACHING READING

Before teaching reading, it is important to study the meaning of reading and the several aspects in which it is envolved.
First of all, the discussion about social contexts is interesting. According to MIKULECKY,B.S., the social contexts are indispensable for acquiring reading, and they include the student´s background, his prior knowledge and the way and the environment in which the reading occurs.
It seems that the first step for teaching reading is to elicit learners´prior knowledge, generating interest in the topic to be read.
Another important teacher´s task is teaching the students particular skills for comprehending reading material.These skills should be chosen and adapted for a specific reading lesson, as there are so many reading strategies, such as analyzing, predicting, scanning, skimming, summarizing. Learners should be encouraged to be aware of what they are doing and the reason about that, while they are reading.
The work with the vocabulary has also an impoortant role in the development of reading.
Summarizing, students need opportunities to develop a consciousness of themselves as readers in English.
