If someone needs to write na essay, the computer is not the best device for someione to do a good academic work. By clicking on the wrong key, one can lose all the text already written. People cannot get inspired when typing on a keyboard. “It is totally mechanical”, they say. Therefore, they would rather write on a piece of paper than on a computer keyboard. These are common excuses a great number of people give for not using this instrument to write school papers. Although many individuals might think it is a difficult tool to work with, the computer is extremely helpful when writing an essay.
The computer offers apparatus for anyone to organize their work and to have access to the latest research. One of the most important devices on writing the computer may present is the word processing. According to Marjorie Sinic, “As a tool for practice in writing, the word processor’s usefulness is unparalleled. Writing researchers have long advised that the key to fluent writing is to write as much as possible. The key to exact writing is to revise repeatedly. The word processor was designed to revising and manipulating language. For inexperienced writers (who tend to make corrections at the word level), proofreading is easier on the computer. As writers become more experienced, they tend to make more complex changes. These “reorganizational” changes involve moving sentences and paragraphs around, reorganizing whole sections of articles, inserting new material, and discarding writing that no longer fits or serves. Even a beginner can use the delete, strikeover, and insert the functions to make simple changes. Later, with a brief period of practice, more complex changes, such as changing the order of the sections in a paper or adding passages written in another draft, can be made.” Another important point to be mentioned is that when people finish their paper, they can rely on the computer for a spelling and grammar check.
A twenty-four hour access to research is extremely helpful when someone needs to develop and to enhance his or her text. As a research tool the Web is becoming indispensable. Thus, just click on the mouse and type some words to enter the Internet and have entrance to all the information on the subject one is writing about. Furthermore newspapers and libraries are sending their material to the World Wide Web. It is a convenient device, and it has many advantages. One of them is that one does not have to leave his or her seat to look for the necessary information, and can access it at any day of the week and at any time.
Besides helping with the organization and development (which is done through the research on the internet) of the essay, spelling and grammar check becomes the focus. When writing without the help of the computer, people must have plenty of time to spend looking for the right spelling of the words in a dictionary, and for the correct sentence structure in grammar books. With the programs presented by the computer you can do a spelling check by just doing one click on the mouse, and for the grammar check, someone can get on the internet to have access to a vast number or sites that will help in this matter.
When writing an essay on the computer, the word processing program, provide individuals with the necessary devices required to accomplish all the techniques demanded by academic society. Doing the layout, giving double space between the lines, putting words in boldface, and italic, making the font bigger or smaller, are techniques easier to be done in the computer. People may argue that it is exceptionally difficult to deal with too many tools, that they might make many mistakes and will take them longer to write their essays. Writing with the help of the computer for the first time it may seem awkward, but after doing it for a few times it becomes an extremely easy task. It is just a matter of practicing, and will save people an enormous amount of time. As the old proverb says: “Practice makes it perfect.”
Concluding, someone cannot count with a better instrument when writing an essay. If the time to write and hand the academic text is short, do it on the computer. The time one spend on writing, erasing, doing spell check, and going to the library to do research, like people used to do on the old times, can be used to produce a higher quality text in terms of research, of organization and of grammar and spell check.
