Keep gutters and downspouts clean. Debris in gutters and downspouts can cause gutters to overfill and spill rain water onto the facia causing premature rotting of facia and soffit. Animals can chew through rotted wood much easier than well maintained wood. When cleaning gutters, make sure there is a drip edge. This is an L shape aluminun or steel strip installed under the shingles and hangs over into the gutter. Without this drip edge, rain water may run back under the shingles and onto facia causing rotting.
