Amy,

The mice situation is an all too common problem, especially this time of year. Depending on where you live, the temp. is dropping quite a bit at night which causes the mice to look for warmer homes (attics, walls). The field behind your home is also contributing to the infestation.

The most important thing is to NOT use any type of poison. No matter what the manufacturer says, the mice will die in the walls and attic, creating a very unpleasant odor for some time to come.

As for trapping mice, live traps are not effective as releasing them will only allow them to come right back inside. Snap traps or glue boards work best.

Mice can come through the smallest opening such as between the siding and foundation, corner moldings of aluminum and vinyl siding, however, if you were successful in sealing all the openings, the mice may increase activity chewing their way out.

A good repellent for mice is Ajax cleanser (powder form with bleach). Sprinkle a 2 inch wide strip around the entire foundation and repeat when Ajax is no longer visible. Ajax is very inexpensive (.50 to .75 cents a can) and 4 or 5 cans is usually enough for most homes.

Mice are constantly licking their feet and the Ajax has a very bitter taste which will cause the mice to look for a more suitable habitat.

As with any product, use caution around children. Although animals will not intentionally lick the Ajax, curious children could.

Keep trapping and use the Ajax if it is safe to do so.

Good Luck,
