Nancy,
Since you were unable to find the creature, I would lean towards it being a bat that has worked its way down from the attic. Of course this is only speculation, however, usually if a bird is flying around the house, it would land in a obvious location and continue flying around until it found a way out.
We will assume it was a bat and with that said, you should call a Licensed Nuisance Wildlife Control Technician to inspect the home. Areas that need to be inspected are the outside structure for entrance and exit holes, the attic for signs of bat intrusion and hibernation, the living quarters for the bat itself. Bats that enter living quarters usually land on an inconspicuous area of the home such as behind curtains, on hanging clothes, or anywhere that gives them a roost out of the light. Since the bat found its way down into the living quarters, usually they find their way back up to the attic. Most bats can enter through a hole that is smaller than 1/2 inch in diameter, so that leaves endless possibilities of how the bat entered the living quarters.
1. You should contact a Professional for the inspection.
2. If you do happen to find the bat, let a professional or your local animal control remove it and have it tested for rabies through the McHenry County Health Department. Bats are nocturnal and there is a slight chance they could bite while your sleeping and you wouldn't notice it. Even if no one was bitten, the bat should be tested since even exposure to a bat could cause rabies to be transmitted to humans. Before you leave the house screaming, the key word here is "slight chance". I don't want you or your mother to be afraid, I just want to tell you the facts. Furthermore, you would be surprised at the number of homes that have bats roosting in the attics, walls, and soffits as this is very common.
Again, don't be afraid, use common sense. Don't try to capture the bat yourself, hire a professional or call animal control. Have the house inspected ASAP. Leave a few lights on at night, this may help deter the bat from flying around and staying in the living quarters.
Good Luck,
