I've tried them especially in my 20's to help strengthen my back due to a slipped disc. Haven't had back problems in 12 or so years. They're great for balance and strengthening and you can do Yoga exercised with them (though I prefer Yoga and Tai Chi solo).

If you try one, make sure it's the right size for your height. When sitting on one, your thighs should be parellel to the floor with your knees level or slightly below your hips. If you use one for exercise it should be firm; for sitting it should be softer. They even make ball chairs now to ease back problems!
